Minnie Mouse cake & cupcakes

I got an order for a Minnie mouse cake and some Minnie "ears" cupcakes... this is the end result. there are 24 total cupcakes, I just grabbed one of each flavor for the picture.

changes are coming....

Hello everyone! I hope you had a nice & safe 4th of July! I sure did. Took a little mini-vacation with my family and went camping in the new RV that my parents got! Such a great way to camp!
I have some news coming down the pipe line.... I will be taking some time off to stay at home with my new little addition to the Powers family. Some time around the first of September we will be welcoming our son to the family... so I will be taking a little break from cakes for that time. Starting August 22nd - October 17th 2011. During that time, I will be coming out with the new holiday flavors and will start taking orders on October 17th and continue to take orders until December 31st at a discounted price for an 8" round cake or cupcakes.... and possibly cake pops decorated for the season.
During that time, there will also be a couple of other changes in the works. I will be setting myself up with a DBA and will have a website! All the information that's on my blog will be changed over to the website. I will also continue to have my Facebook fan page so you can always become a fan there and get updates as soon as I post them!
I thank you for your continued support and wish you and your family the very best!

butterflies & polka dots

This cake was for a baby shower. The nursery had butterflies in it and the hostess wanted to incorporate that but she loved another cake that I created for a baby boy shower with dots. So we combined the 2 and created this cake! The butterflies are all made from gumpaste and have disco dust on them to give them that extra sparkle.

Crawfish Season!

Have you had your crawfish this season? I took on 2 orders for crawfish themed cakes and I think they both turned out great!
First crawfish cake was a crawfish sitting on top of a table cloth with corn, potatoes and a beer can with a custom label.... 30th birthday.
The second cake was a cake that I revisited from doing my very first cake. I recreated the crawfish boil themed cake. Since I have worked on my talents alot more than that very first cake, I was very happy with the outcome. So was everyone else! I got tons of compliments and people telling me that they wanted to have an excuse to have a party just t
o order one of my cakes! Here's the picture......
notice the name was done to look like fish hooks. The birthday boy's passion is fishing... I thought it added a neat touch. The beer bottle ontop is a sugar cast beer bottle. I made the mold and the bottle. The one on the bottom is a real bottle.
Hope you like it as much as I did!

I'm still alive!

Some of you might have begun to wonder where in the heck I have been! I don't blame you! I have so much to update I need to get started now. Geez, last post was in OCTOBER!!!! HEllo??? I would also like to thank those of you who ordered cakes for the holiday season, it was a huge success and I will be doing something similar for Easter. So I think it's way past time for an update. so let's see here....
Let's start with Christmas. On Christmas morning, my husband and I discovered that we are expecting our newest little bundle of joy in early September! We couldn't believe what a surprise it was to discover that we are expecting again! And to find out on Christmas?! That was the icing on the cake! So we had to keep it hush hush for a couple more weeks since I was only 4-6 weeks along. But a couple of weeks ago, we broke the news to the Facebook world and our friends and family! So this Friday I will officially be 15 weeks pregnant! So excited and can't wait to find out if a little boy or a little girl will be our blessing! We should find out in April..... as long as it's healthy!
Next update, my Brother is engaged and is getting married to the best soon to be sister in law ever! I am so excited and so is my family! Their wedding will be soon after the baby is born... so I will that person working out like crazy to get into my bridesmaid dress!
In February I entered a new cake into the cake competition that is held every year in Austin, Texas. I entered as an adult beginner and unfortunately didn't place but was congratulated by so many people because they thought I had won with my cake! Needless to say, I wasn't the only one shocked and disappointed by not placing with my cake! That's okay, it gives me more time to create a winning cake for the next competition! I will reuse this cake but add more to it to still have the same theme but reworked to show off more of my creativity. It's a learning experience and I am learning! But I did get to see some cake celebrities! I got to chat it up with some of the contestants on the TLC show, The Next Great Baker! I also managed to get a couple of pictures with some of the contestants! I also got the chance to take a picture with, Michelle Bommarino, Lauren Kitchens, Corina, Karen and the winner of the Next Great Baker, Dana Hebert. I also talked with, James Rossel, Nicolas Lodge, Marina Sausa, Michelle Bommarino and Lauren Kitchens. I really had a great time at the show and can't wait to do it again... but next time, with a winning entry!
So now that just about catches me up. I am going to offer cakes and cupcakes for a special pricing for Easter. It's going to work alot like the Holiday cakes but the decorations and flavors will reflect the season. I am getting the flavors together and once I get the whole thing organized, I will send out another post and also with emails, and through Facebook. So keep an eye out for the Easter cakes!
I have attached a picture of the last competition cake from Austin! enjoy!

Oklahoma State Sugar Arts Show in Tulsa, OK

Hello all! I just wanted to update you since it's been a little while that I have done anything on my blog. There's a reason for that!! But first let me thank my mom, Lydia and my husband, Corey for helping me out as much as they did. With out their help I wouldn't have gotten to Oklahoma!
For the last month or so, I have been getting my entires ready for the Oklahoma show.I started off thinking that I was going to enter five entries... ..then it came time to doing those five entries.... and we ended up with 2 completed cakes.
I entered the adult beginner division and entered a novelty category and a holiday category. my holiday cake was five cakes that were made and covered to look like fondant Christmas presents. They had sugar bows and sugar gift tags and then stacked ontop of each other all sitting on a round tree skirt that was used as the base. My novelyt cake was a red cheese wheel with a wedge removed and all hand painted "sticker" details and sitting on a wooden cheese board. And that happened to turned out to be the first place winner!
My next competition will be in the Austin in February. more details will come when I get more information to pass along!
Thank you all for your continued support!
All the best,
Daphne Powers
